What to Do…

by Dr. Pants on Sep.21, 2007, under Life and the Universe, Norway

environ.pngI sat down and figured out what it is costing me in gas every month. It costs roughly 11-12 ($2) kroner a liter for gas right now. It pay roughly 500 kroner a week to get around. That’s 2,000 ($355) kroner a month for gas. That’s actually pretty normal for anyone, here, living about 30 minutes from work… I would guess. BTW, I am driving a 90’s model Mazda Station wagon that I bought when I first started working last year. It runs great, passed the dreaded EU Inspection and suits us fine when we go to IKEA or anywhere else that requires strollers, clothes, and other kid and adult crap.

Just out of curiosity, the other day, I searched for ‘electric car’. To my surprise I found this. The Think car made here in Norway. It looked like a viable option to the car I drive now, considering gas just keeps going up. Plus, the government will excuse you from the 4,000 kroner road tax we pay every year, you get to drive in faster lanes, you get free parking in some places and you pay roughly $2 for a 180 kilometer drive. Norway gets most of its electricity from hydro-electric plants. Bonus… helping the environment. I would go from paying $335 a month to about $20 bucks (high estimate) Not bad eh? Then I saw one while driving to work this morning. Fuck that.

So now what are my options? Well, a buddy from work told me there is a company that will convert gas vehicles to electric. Hope he finds the name soon. I thought, buy a decent used vehicle (the Think is 200,000 kroner plus 900 kroner for a required ‘maintenance insurance’ ) and have it converted.

I figure I could get a semi-manly vehicle and plug it in. Win-win?
