I just got the new Macbook today. I ordered it with an English keyboard so it took a little while. I got the teacher discount and the rebate for the ipod nano. Truth be told I ordered the Macbook before the ipod offer (for educators and students) but called them and asked for a rebate anyway. They gave in and gave me back about $100. Not bad eh? The rebate on top of the education discount means I paid less. Simple.
So what the fsck s up?
It was the last day before fall break (10 days Woo Hoo!) today. I decided to watch a film in my classes. The cool thing is, when I watch films with my students here, without subtitles, they get a serious ‘a learnin goin’ on’. They all wanted to watch current films. I decided that Full Metal Jacket was much better. I blew their fucking minds wide open. Actually, they all thought it was pretty good. You could have changed the words Vietnam for Iraq and the story would have been the same. Well, except for the ‘Suckee Suckee’ parts of course.
More tomorrow. I hope to start posting more again.
I sat down and figured out what it is costing me in gas every month. It costs roughly 11-12 ($2) kroner a liter for gas right now. It pay roughly 500 kroner a week to get around. That’s 2,000 ($355) kroner a month for gas. That’s actually pretty normal for anyone, here, living about 30 minutes from work… I would guess. BTW, I am driving a 90′s model Mazda Station wagon that I bought when I first started working last year. It runs great, passed the dreaded EU Inspection and suits us fine when we go to IKEA or anywhere else that requires strollers, clothes, and other kid and adult crap.
Just out of curiosity, the other day, I searched for ‘electric car’. To my surprise I found this. The Think car made here in Norway. It looked like a viable option to the car I drive now, considering gas just keeps going up. Plus, the government will excuse you from the 4,000 kroner road tax we pay every year, you get to drive in faster lanes, you get free parking in some places and you pay roughly $2 for a 180 kilometer drive. Norway gets most of its electricity from hydro-electric plants. Bonus… helping the environment. I would go from paying $335 a month to about $20 bucks (high estimate) Not bad eh? Then I saw one while driving to work this morning. Fuck that.
So now what are my options? Well, a buddy from work told me there is a company that will convert gas vehicles to electric. Hope he finds the name soon. I thought, buy a decent used vehicle (the Think is 200,000 kroner plus 900 kroner for a required ‘maintenance insurance’ ) and have it converted.
I figure I could get a semi-manly vehicle and plug it in. Win-win?
