Discopants and Haircuts

From a Comment..

I was over at my neighbor’s house, the other day, and noticed that he had DSL also. Now, he and she are 80 years old or so. I don’t care if they cross-country ski 5-8 kilometers a few times a week! They don’t understand computers. It also doesn’t matter that I can’t cross-country ski 5-8 kilometers a few times a week. What matters is that I pooh on a regular basis. Hah!

So I am, right now, as we speak, searching for the Discopants and Haircuts archives. I really want to repost all the old horrors.

I got a comment from DK last post about how living in Wisconsin with ‘traditional Norwegians’ is so much different from what I have written about recently. You know, people being not so neighborly and such….

How about a few observations?

I am located in a small county about an hour from Oslo by car. Some things I have learned about living in Norway:

All Norwegians are assholes and Americans rock! (Are you kidding me? I am not that small minded.. )

Here’s a few I noticed…

1. Old people always say hi to you. (at least in Drammen) Young people have no clue why you would say hi to them.

2. Northern Norway is much more friendly to people… But they are also small town people.

3. Oslo feels big but isn’t really that big.

4. The Norwegians do not have the same facial expressions as Americans. They can be really enjoying your conversation… but you would never know.. When they are drinking (in general) they are much different.

5. Being outlandish and over-the-top is not something you want to do (except when drinking) . There is an unspoken rule here, something I have heard told to me many times, that you should never ’stick out, or be noticed’. I find this very unamerican. Would Rocky not stick out?!

6. My cock is the biggest here.

7. They still revere Morten Harket from A-Ha.. He is still a celebrity here.

8. They lack any decent taco places here..

9. If you are thinking of taking a European trip you need to really pack the money in to visit Norway. This place is extremely expensive. I make more money sure… I think nothing of paying 3 bucks for a small head of broccoli, but you won’t..

“There is an unspoken rule here, something I have heard told to me many times…” That’s the problem right there. They insist on speaking unspoken rules. Its like looking up the word dictionary in the dictionary….something you simply do not do. Damn, it’s as if you live in a different country or something (I would imagine Texas is like that). Good luck, you’re going to need it.

That was extremely insightful man.. Wow. Looking up dictionary in the dictionary. I think my head just exploded.. But thanks for the words of encouragement… I need all I can get.
