Geek Part II

I am in no way an expert in the ways of Zen Computing. I simply like to portray myself as knowing what is up. Sure, I know more than the average guy, but I am clueless when it comes to these Windows computers. Sad, I know..
My Step-father,the last time he visited, gave me an Intell Pentium II laptop with 64 mb ram.. . It worked well as a paper weight for important documents. I tried installing several different versions of Linux.. But none, I felt, were what I needed. That’s not saying linux is bad.. it’s just saying that, for a damn old computer laptop, I wasn’t getting the vibe.. Then I stumbled upon.. Tiny XP.. a hacked up, all crazy, nutty version of Windows XP. It’s freakin’ crazy. Completely simple.. Extremely easy to install and it fucking works well.. I’m impressed. 150mb and it runs on this damn old laptop…
I have heard of many using it on their nice systems with no complaints.. just a better running, faster running computer..
And it was good.
End of geeky sermons..

I am sitting here in the living room of our apartment. It’s about 6 in the evening and Natalie is at her grandmothers. Amanda just woke up. Both kids have been seriously ill this week. Scary sick. It’s been my first real experience with a scary illness with the kids. Both have a ‘false’ strep throat. They’re all congested in their lungs and look like they are really suffering from it. Natalie got it first and is past the tough part. Amanda, only 5 months, is beginning to look a lot better.
I got a Windows laptop from the school am working at. I asked for it so I could get comfortable with the Windows operating system. So far, I really hate it. I have been a Mac user since the first one was made. I have used Windows from time-to-time but basically to surf or write something in Word. This thing is a pain in the ass. I spend more time checking and rechecking, scanning and rescanning.. searching and researching. What anyone sees in these machines is beyond me. My Mac just works.
I have a Mac that is 8 years old. Deb’s using it right now to listen to music and look for apartments. It’s running the latest version of Mac OSX. It’s also providing me with a wireless bridge so I can post this entry and surf the web. 8 years old! How many Pc users are still using their 8 year old computer for everyday use? I have never had a problem with the damn thing..
Sure this a geeky post. Please forgive.
But then you hear the argument that Pc’s are cheaper. How? They need to be thrown out after a few years unless you know what you are doing and can get some other use out of it. And then I read that the new Winows Operating System, Vista, will require 1 gig of ram for good performance.
Insanity I tell you..
Thanks

Thanks for the comments. It isn’t all bad you know. It’s just the winter of discontent. That’s all. I will get through all. There’s nothing on this earth that I can’t handle folks.
There are rays of sunshine coming into my life all the time. Deb, Natalie, Amanda.. friends, family..
I can’t imagine what it is like for people to live in a place that is actually hard. You know, violence, poverty, starvation.. the whole nine. I am actually quite lucky.
Let’s do some music.
