How to Greet Norwegians
by Dr. Pants on Mar.09, 2006, under Norway
I’m sitting here in the library at the High School I am, kind of, working at. It’s lunch time. My head is spinning from all the Norwegian I have been speaking and hearing. If I had an office of my own I would be in it, right now, with the lights off and the door closed.
I’m finding I like Norwegians more now. They are a people who take some time to get used to. They don’t come off as initially friendly in most situations. It takes some getting used to. But now I understand more about how interactions happen. I have gotten used to new reactions to things. Maybe a typical situation where an American may smile, a Norwegian might just look.. expressionless. I programmed that reaction into my subconsious now.
What I find most interesting is how Norwegians greet each other. When introduced, a simple smile and handshake are appropriate. This is so much different from the way Americans head butt each other and whip down their pants screaming, ‘tortilla!’. The new way takes a little getting used to but I think I have the hang of it…
Hand shake.. gentle smile..
